Funga Alafiya

WELL, come!

EarthSONG Troubadour Lois Fein shares a song from the Yoruba culture of West Africa that she, her Mom, and sister learned directly from world-renowned Nigerian drummer Babatunde Olatunji and his lead dancer Alala Dei during a weekend at Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, New York many years ago.  It’s called “Funga Alafiya.”

Come and singalong!

Sing with Lois in unison several times.

In Rounds

Once you are ready, see if you can sing this song in rounds.

Let Lois sing the first literal line: “Funga Alafiya” and then you and your family immediately jump right in from the top of the song.  Hold your own while singing the whole song (even though Lois is also singing at the same time) and then you can actually relax and “hear” the beauty of the two parts dovetailing with one another.  It is exquisite.  Our voices, our bodies, ARE our FIRST instruments!

"Funga Alafiya" is the third video of EarthSONG Singalong - a virtual, intergenerational song circle fostering creativity, community, love of the Earth, music, movement, storytelling, song, and other expressive arts.
